Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers No Longer In Complete Control

According to Liverpool’s managing director, Ian Ayre, Liverpool are set to restrict Brendan Rodgers total control in the transfer market by allocating a committee to work alongside the Liverpool manager to decide future transfers.

What will surely be alluded here is that John Henry, Tom Werner and Ian Ayre have looked at Rodgers’ previous history with transfers and been sufficiently unimpressed enough to allow him to continue unaided.

I have to say, I’m surprised they left it this long before deciding to limit the Welshman’s power.

After the summer spending debacle that defined Kenny Dalglish’s reign I was expecting some kind of amended transfer policy to be put in place for the start of this season, but Werner, Henry and Ayre obviously had frontal lobotomies this summer and forgot all about it. As a result, Rodgers was allowed off the reins and able to use all his inexperience to purchase over-priced dross such as Joe Allen and Fabio Borini.

As part of an overhaul to the way Liverpool conduct transfer business, Fenway Sports Group have appointed Dave Fallows as head of recruitment and poached scout Barry Hunter from Manchester City. FSG will be trying a new strategy this coming season with Rodgers becoming an integral part of a recruitment team instead of wielding the sole vote.

It’s certainly less of a risk to have a whole committee reviewing each transfer in and out of the club rather than having just one person responsible, however, the problems will arise should a player be a complete flop. Then the issue will become who is ultimately responsible for the transfer and does this give Rodgers a get out of jail free card for the purchase?

In my opinion, the restructuring of the way Liverpool conduct transfers can only be a good thing as it should ensure less mistakes are made and Liverpool enjoy more successful transfer windows.

Liverpool fans will be hoping that this change in policy leads to more players like Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho being bought and less like Joe Allen and Fabio Borini.
