Despite his slight loss of form this season, Wayne Rooney remains the ‘franchise player’ at Manchester United. His influence has been covered a little by the goals of Robin Van Persie, but a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain probably isn’t going to happen.
Rooney earns massive wages at Old Trafford. He is one of the highest paid players in the world in terms of salary, and he’s signed up for another two years. Basically, this means it would take a colossal bid from France, or anywhere else for that matter, to pry him out of Manchester.
Rooney will always have success in the Premier League, he’s too good not to. He can play as a forward, a wide man, a target man or even a center midfielder, making him still a valuable asset for Manchester United. And with Sir Alex Ferguson so vigorously denying the Rooney rumors, he looks certain to remain with the soon-to-be Premier League champions.
It would be a strange move for the ex-Everton man if he were to leave for France. With all due respect, Ligue 1 isn’t the league that a player of Rooney’s stardom should be playing in at this stage of his career. If he were a couple of years older, maybe the transfer could happen. But he’s only 27, and can provide more ‘Player of the year’ seasons.
But what a signing it would be for PSG. As unlikely as it is, imagine Rooney joining the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Lucas Moura. A rather frightening proposition for the rest of Europe. But still, the move to PSG would be a step down from Manchester United, even though the French club is an exciting and ongoing project.
