Manchester United can now win the Premier League title on Monday night after second placed Manchester City lost 3-1 to Tottenham. But as the job, to bring the silverware back to the red side of Manchester, is nearly complete, they are likely to have their sights set on breaking the Premier League’s points record.
Old Trafford will have a party atmosphere as the leaders know that a win will secure the club’s 20th title. Many may assume that United’s season is over, but as we all know Sir Alex Ferguson strives for the very best and beyond. So it will come as little surprise if they go on a hunt for the points record.
The record is currently 95, which came from Chelsea during Jose Mourinho‘s first season at the club in 2004-05. Both City and United went close to the record last season as they both won 89 points during the campaign.
So with five games to go, that’s 15 points up for grabs — United need 14 to beat the very impressive record that was set nearly a decade ago by the side, which sparked the new era at Chelsea. However, it is a tough task as the remaining fixtures include Chelsea at home and a trip to Arsenal.
City’s loss to Tottenham was almost a reflection in the difference from their current season to last as they conceded three goals in seven minutes late on. Once again this season they failed to get the job completed, they’ve been too inconsistent in comparison to the relentless United. They’ll now even be slightly anxious of the mere five points gap to Arsenal (at time of writing) in third, although Chelsea may make that even less if they beat Liverpool.
