Let’s make no mistake, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is one of the most naturally talented finishers on the planet. His ability to score dynamic, breath-taking goals out of apparently limited opportunity is bar none. Problem is, however, he has the tendency to make stupid mistakes which off-set his technical brilliance.
One of these mistakes is his penchant for biting his opponents. Yes, you read that correctly.
For the second time in his professional soccer career, Suarez has chomped into an opponent. In the second-half of today’s tie against Chelsea — in the 56th minute, to be specific– Suarez was tied up with Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in the Chelsea box, grabbed his arm and bit into it.
As would be predicted, Twitter exploded with commentary:
Disgraceful. Luis Suarez is not being fed enough. Just £2 a month can get enough for him to stop eating footballers #foodforsuarez

Luis Suarez has announced he’s leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. He’s been offered 200 grand a week on The Walking Dead.

BREAKING: Action already taken on Luis Suarez. twitter.com/Now__Football/…
— Now Football (@Now__Football) April 21, 2013
If this was the first time Suarez had ever done something like this — or, had a relatively clean sheet over time — it could be easily considered a moment of craziness, not a pattern of bizarre behavior. Problem is, it isn’t.
In November of 2010 when playing for Ajax in the Dutch League, Suarez took a bite out of PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal which led to a seven-game suspension:
Suarez also was charged with racial abuse of Manchester United striker Patrice Evra in an October 2011 match after Evra alleged that Suarez sent racial epithets his way more than 10 times during the match then refused to shake his hand after the match, throwing more abuse his way at that moment.
There’s no doubt that Luis Suarez can play football. He’s one of the best technical strikers in the world, but until his temper is controlled in one way or another his crazy side will always rise to the top.
That’s unfortunate for him, for Liverpool, its fans and the game of football as a whole.
