Fenerbahce face their toughest task of the season when they travel to Lisbon next week to play the second leg of the UEFA Europa League semifinal. Earlier today, the Turkish side defeated their Portuguese opponents 1-0, thanks to a second half header by defender Egemen Korkmaz.
Next week, Fenerbahce will travel to a very hostile Estadio Da Luz to face the same Lisbon representatives. They are undefeated at home in the Europa League this season, so with their most important match coming up in a week’s time, they look to stay undefeated in front of their beloved crowd.
The defense, midfield and attack of either side have to be patient. Benfica love the style of quick short passing to orchestrate attacks, whereas Fenerbahce pass the ball to players who like to hold onto it then pass to an open teammate. These are two styles that differ and judging by today’s match, the latter proved to be more effective.
Next week, Oscar Cardozo, Nicolas Gaitan, Pablo Aimar and Luisao (returning from suspension) will look to lead their team to overcome the one goal deficit.
Fenerbahce will be without the suspended Mehmet Topal (defensive midfielder) and striker Pierre Webo. Moussa Sow, Dirk Kuyt and the returning Caner Erkin will lead the attack, with Joseph Yobo, Korkmaz and Gokhan Gonul leading the defense.
These teams have what it takes to go tit for tat against one another. One plays a fast paced game whereas the other plays a physically smart game and this is what makes the game fun to watch. Benfica is strong at home, but if the Turks don’t let the Portuguese fans faze them, they can play their game and perhaps earn a draw and appear in their first ever final. If not, Benfica will do what they couldn’t just a couple of season ago: have a chance to win it all.
