After another disappointing result at the weekend, Tottenham’s doubters are sitting smugly. Tottenham have long been associated with the soft interior Premier League side who can’t pull the trigger.
For good reason, as Tottenham fatally squandered two points at the weekend. Some may consider it a positive point, given Wigan’s tendency to go on long unflinching runs at this stage of the season. But, comparing the two squads, with Tottenham’s talent, they should have the resources to seal a win.
It was the same story last season. With Tottenham coasting, ten points above North London rivals Arsenal, Spurs succumbed to the Gunners’ increasing pressure, and they could have done the same this season.
After defeating Arsenal, this season, Tottenham sat comfortably seven points above their fierce rivals. After an unfortunate result against Liverpool, and a terrible one against Fulham, Tottenham found themselves in the passengers seat in the top-four race.
Spurs currently sit two points behind Arsenal, with a game in hand. Incidentally, the game in hand is against fellow Champions League chasers Chelsea, in what could be a top four play-off.
Tottenham must re-group for their clash with Southampton. The Saints aren’t really challenging for anything, so, on the surface, it should be a win for Tottenham. But as we’ve become accustomed to, it’s never that simple with the Lilywhites.
It’s imperative that Tottenham secure Champions League qualification, as we’re constantly reminded.
Recently, reports emerged suggesting Gareth Bale could leave the club if they do not finish in the top four. The message is pretty clear, qualify for Europe’s elite competition, or bust.
