QPR midfielder Joey Barton‘s future is in an uncertain situation, but a return to Marseille is still the best option.
Now 30, Barton played on Saturday for QPR where he did impress before being praised by Harry Redknapp as a man who has done no wrong under his management.
But despite that I believe a return to France is still the better path for Barton to take this season. His career is coming into its second half now, and after a hugely disruptive and mixed period a move to the south of France was something new last season. The fresh start meant far fewer preconceived ideas from fans and a much more positive attitude from the press, this really was reflected in his on the pitch ability. Yes, he still had a few hot-headed moments for Marseille that we have all grown accustomed to, but it was a Barton last season that really looked the part. He looked happy and comfortable in a role where he was playing for a competitive team. More so, it seemed he was out to prove his football ability rather than settle matters and prove who is the better man – this resulted in a more mature attitude anyway.
Staying with QPR could still show signs of that ‘newer’ Barton, but the chances are he could well become frustrated in the English game once again, especially if an incident arises that provokes fans and media to wind him once again.
He won’t get another chance to play in the Champions League, but with Marseille he has that and the opportunity to reach new heights that would not be possible with QPR. I think Barton is keen to make the most of either situation, but really his desires are firmly set on a return to the south of France.
