Chelsea‘s flamboyant, unpredictable but talented Brazilian David Luiz is the subject of a bid from Barcelona, according to reports.
Barcelona are clearly weak in defensive areas and were badly exposed at times last season — most notably in their crushing Champions League semi-final defeats to Bayern Munich.
David Luiz has impressed in the Premier League with his modern day competent footballing-defensive work. Although he raises the heartbeat every so often with his unorthodox, risky actions, he racks up goals and contributes to the attack, a skill required to play for Barcelona.
Luiz has been used as a defensive midfielder, a position many consider his strongest. He is a powerful player with the ability to win the ball and distribute it well, suiting him to this role.
Whether or not Chelsea will sell is another matter. Luiz is a very valuable asset to Chelsea, and the Blues paid heavily to get him in January 2011.
Jose Mourinho hasn’t invested much in defense, meaning he looks to be fairly satisfied with what he has. If they were to part with Luiz, he would have to be replaced.
Chelsea are starting the season as many people’s favorites to take home the title. With Mourinho back at the helm and only investing in attacking areas, they look set to launch an assault on the top of the Premier League like they did in 2005.
David Luiz has played 62 times in the Premier League for Chelsea, scoring six goals. He is also a regular for the Brazilian National Team.
