Bundesliga: It is Time for Concern, Not Panic at Borussia Dortmund

Six matches into the Bundesliga season, and Borussia Dortmund is only three points out of the relegation zone. Dortmund are usually title contenders and now they must claw their way back into the picture. There are plenty of games to go and this team could get hot at any moment, but the results this far are cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.

After their 2-1 loss to Schalke over the weekend, Dortmund has just seven points from six games. They have a negative goal differential. They have three loses, but did not suffer their third loss in league play until November 23 last season. They went through a rough November and December 2013, but that was due in part to injuries. Injuries are playing a role again this year as their midfield continues to be pieced together.

Captain Mats Hummels insists that Dortmund have been unlucky stating that they were not the worse team in many of their fixtures. Hummels started his first game of the year against Schalke. Dortmund went down 2-0 and dominated the rest of the play from that point, but Klopp was not happy with the defensive performance. He said his team was not ready to play defense and there is no way they could have beat Schalke giving up goals like the two scored in the derby. After saying all of that Klopp still voiced his confidence in his team.

Klopp will hope to get his top choice midfield back soon as Dortmund sit in 12th place looking up to recently promoted Paderborn. They will have a chance to show their merit this week in Champions League play against Anderlecht. They will then have a chance to move up in the Bundesliga against last place Hamburg next weekend. Their next league match will then be against Köln. If they win all three, as they should, then the concern will be gone. Klopp and Dortmund cannot let this get any worse.
