Champions League: Manchester City Frustrated By AS Roma
Manchester City were frustrated by Roma in their Champions League group stage encounter at home, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
The Etihad feasted on a tight game of soccer where the home side played a 4-4-2 with the visitors opting for the 4-3-3. The difference is mainly up top and in the middle as the 4-4-2 gives two strikers the chance to work off one another to try and score. The 4-3-3 has three up front with only one striker in the middle, hoping the wingers could help him a bit.
The midfield has four which clogs up the flanks and the middle going forward and back. As for the three-man midfield of the opponent, they can pass among themselves in addition to having three options up the field.
Roma were able to hit on the counter as they utilized their speed and quick passing with three midfielders, three attackers and their two full backs constantly making runs up the flanks. City seemed lost on defense as they failed to show respect and decided to give most of the work to the center backs and the keeper.
Another issue is that even though Yaya Toure and David Silva controlled play in the middle with James Milner ruling the left, they were still unable to create true danger on the Roma goal. Everything they did was predictable which is why they had to settle for a slightly entertaining draw.
The next time City face Roma is when they should switch to a 4-4-2 diamond or a 4-3-3. That way, they can use their own speed, technique and flawless passing to match the system of the Italian side. Their 4-4-2 was barely overwhelming going forward as they played way too flat at times. Therefore, playing in a different system can do some more damage and they can establish their expected dominance.
