Chivas USA Comes to Their End On a Win

Sunday’s match between Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes was essentially a battle to avoid last place in the Western Conference, but it was still important. This would be Chivas’s last match ever. It was announced in September that Chivas USA would not only cease to exist after a re-brand, but that it would be suspended for 1-2 years. In its roughly 10-year existence, Chivas have not been known as a victorious club, but for any club to come to an end in such an abrupt manner is quite a blow.

The match against San Jose was Chivas’ last chance to prove their existence wasn’t a complete failure. San Jose had had a similarly rough season, and neither team wanted to go down as the worse club in the Western Conference. It meant a lot more to Chivas, and it showed on the field when they were able to score the needed goal and keep a clean sheet. It was the best way to go out given the circumstances.

Chivas had a spectacular start to the season with ErickCuboTorres at its disposal. The 21-year-old Mexican international was scoring goal after goal, but it soon was not enough for the club to keep up in the league. It proved that having a spectacular scorer like Torres, and a great goalkeeper like Dan Kennedy, does not make a perfect team. They weren’t able to compete for the top, but some of their players still showed excellent skill.

It would have been great for someone to buy Chivas from MLS and plan the re-brand within the one year, but it was just wishful thinking. Now the players are without a home, and the Los Angeles Galaxy has lost its L.A. Derby rivals for at least a year. It would be nice to keep Torres in MLS, but if he gets other offers, no one would blame him for a leaving a league that suspended the team he started with.
