Cristiano Ronaldo was once again on target to save Portugal from embarrassment against Armenia in European Championship Qualifier. The Real Madrid attacker broke the European Championship (qualifiers and competition proper) all-time goal scoring record. The Portuguese captain had been level with Danish legend Jon Dahl Tomasson with 22 goals apiece.
CR7 has made it a habit to score crucial goals for Portugal. Ronaldo has performed his game-saving performance against Denmark in the last round of Euro Qualifiers in the 95 minute to score the go ahead goal. The Portuguese captain also obliged against the United States in their World Cup group stage match, as he created the killer pass to break American hearts. Portugal has become too dependent on the Real Madrid forward to be their hero.
Ronaldo scored his 23 goal in the competition. The Portuguese Peach has reportedly claimed that this particular record was not really on his mind, and that he was more enthused about the crucial three points Portugal got in their Euro Qualifiers.
The record did not receive much attention or enthusiasm because of the lack of Lionel Messi factor. Messi has always had a hard time being Argentina’s game winner compared to his time at Barcelona.
In a game where Armenia seemed to be in control with the majority of the ball possession, Portugal desperately needed a hero, and Ronaldo finally obliged in the 72 minute. The European Championship goal scoring record looks to be Ronaldo’s to extend.
