If there was one word to describe the Manchester United season so far, it would be injury-plagued. From the frontline to the midfield to the defenders, the physio’s office at Old Trafford has needed a revolving door this campaign.

The latest Red Devil to suffer an injury is defender Luke Shaw, who rolled his ankle early in the first half in last weekend’s 2-1 win over rival Arsenal and had to be subbed off for Ashley Young.

The ankle problem is the latest injury for Shaw, who has had trouble staying healthy during his short stint with the team since coming over from Southampton in June. But when he’s on the pitch, Shaw has shown great pacing and offensive prowess for a left back.

United skipper Louis Van Gaal has stated to the press that Shaw could miss anywhere from four to six weeks, which means that United could potential be with out their wunderkind defender for the rest of 2014.

The upcoming fixtures for Manchester United are home against Hull City tomorrow, then Stoke City at home, Southampton away, Liverpool and home and Aston Villa, which are all winnable games for United — even Liverpool, who are on a poor run and haven’t won a game in any competition since beating Swansea in the Capital One Cup 2-1 on Oct 28.

Helping out Van Gaal’s side in covering for the loss of Shaw will be not only the return of Radamel Falcao but also Argentinean defender Marcos Rojo, who will slot in nicely in between youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett and along with fill-in Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia.

Having Rojo, who was the big defensive coup for United in the last transfer market, will give some relief to the concerns over the defense, but until Shaw and Daley Blind return from their injuries, it’ll be up to the patchwork backline to hold down the fort for Manchester United. There won’t be much of a problem, thanks in large part to a lucky break in the schedule.
