Southampton welcome league-leaders Chelsea to St. Mary’s for a weekend Premier League clash that promises to be one of the most intriguing fixtures of the holiday season. But will it be a veritable cracker or a damp squib?
Fresh from two fantastic wins over Everton and Crystal Palace, Ronald Koeman looks to have his side back into a proper rhythm once more. They had floundered a bit in recent times with four league losses in a row, but the fact that they managed to score six goals in their last two matches underlines they’ve come quite a long way since then and will be ready for a fight.
No doubt keen to get back to the form they exhibited, they’ve been working hard on playing some more coherent football over the festive period. Having been found out to a degree against the big guns this season, their fans will be hoping they can learn from the mistakes they made against the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United which saw them concede six goals.
In none of those matches were they well and truly out of the contest. They looked bright for large spells, but they simply failed to take the chances that came their way. If they can show they’ve worked on those errors and tried their best to find some solutions, Sunday’s clash could well be a really tight affair.
As for Chelsea, they once more find themselves locked in a deadly matchup with The Cityzens at the summit, so they’ll be equally as eager to prove a point; and if they can manage that, they should come out the other side smiling.
Having won their most recent two fixtures against Stoke City and West Ham United, The Blues seem to have put the memories of their draw and loss against Aston Villa and Newcastle United behind them. And that spells trouble for The Saints.
Of course, they’re unlikely to have everything their own way, because a lack of vocal support has seen them wilt on occasion this season. That’s something they won’t have the benefit of in Southampton’s backyard.
This isn’t make or break time for Chelsea, but if they are to go on and win the league, they’ll need to prove themselves against one of the most industrious and inventive side’s in the league. It won’t be an easy ride.
Prediction: A final score of 2-1 to the away side.
