Another day in the festive period, another mouth-watering Premier League fixture; this time around it’s Tottenham Hotspur‘s clash with Manchester United that takes center stage on Sunday.
The Red Devils look to have finally found their top gear as they’ve surged into third spot over the last few matches, outstripping both Southampton and West Ham United along the way.
Proving themselves to be a totally different outfit than the one that began the campaign, they’ve forced many commentators and pundits to wonder whether they might actually be the real deal. And their 3-1 win over Newcastle United has further strengthened that view.
Can they go all the way and actually challenge Manchester City and Chelsea at the summit?
The short answer? No. As yours truly pointed out a few days ago in this article, they still have a long way to go, despite what their recent form might suggest.
In their last six matches, they’ve won five and drawn one, which is a really impressive string of results. In truth they ought to be good enough to navigate a way past Spurs, but they still need to find out how to maximize performances in the long run, especially with such a hampered squad.
Mauricio Pochettino‘s men have not had the greatest season so far, and nobody will be more aware of that fact than the players themselves. However, they have shown tremendous signs of a fightback in recent times as they’ve started to steady the ship. Three wins from their previous six matches — the most recent coming against Leicester City — might not be as good a run of form as Louis van Gaal‘s charges, but it is still a positive step in the right direction for them.
Nevertheless, even with home advantage it’s difficult to foresee anything other than a loss, or at best a draw, for The Lilywhites.
Undoubtedly, their best bet of causing any damage to their opponents at White Hart Lane is star striker Harry Kane who’s netted half a dozen times this season. Continuing on from the promise he showed last year, he’s managed to become the club’s top striker and has finally found his feet in both Europe and in the Premier League.
This one will be hugely entertaining, but it’s also looking quite predictable right now.
Prediction: A final score of 3-1 to the away side.
