Arsenal’s defensive shortcomings are no secret in the soccer world. Arsene Wenger has been criticized for his reluctance to sign defensive-minded players. Mats Hummels is one of the highest rated defenders in Europe and Arsenal need to sign the German international.
Hummels is a strong defender who stands at 6-foot-3, but also enjoys the technical skills to play the ball comfortably in possession. The German international has also been known to threaten opposition goals with his aerial abilities. The potential tandem of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker would definitely improve Arsenal’s defense.
Dortmund’s Mats Hummels has been linked with a move away from the club for a number of years. It has been reported that Hummels is now interested in signing for either Manchester United or Arsenal. Although Jurgen Klopp and Borussia Dortmund will want to prevent any of their star players leaving the team, BVB’s position in the relegation zone of the Bundesliga might not allow them much choice.
Arsenal have so far allowed 23 goals in the English Premier League, conceding more goals than their rivals occupying the top rung of the league. The North London club will need to employ more discipline in their defensive line in order to convincingly challenge for titles in the future. Arsenal should sign Hummels to not only strengthen their backline, but to make sure Manchester United or another Premier League rival does not end up with such an immensely talented player.
However, Arsenal and Manchester United may have to convince Hummels by finishing within UEFA Champions League qualification position.
