Galatasaray Needs More Creativity On Offense

Galatasaray hosted and lost 2-0 against Diyarbakirspor in their second meeting in their group of the Turkish Cup. Missing Semih Kaya and Aurelien Chedjou due to injury and the African Cup of Nations did not make matters any easier.

The 4-2-3-1 brought about decent passing and a condensed style of play moving forward, but being stretched defensively truly hurt them. Felipe Melo and Hakan Balta were both chosen to partner up as center-backs. The former enjoys assisting on the plays, whereas the other has no business sitting centrally.

Coskun was responsible for the second goal as the young defender was beaten to the cross, which was headed home easily by counterpart Yusuf. Balta should have moved over to lend some assistance to make sure the home side won the ball. Even with this loss, Galatasaray still has nine points whereas Diyarbakir moves up to four. The Lions will most likely win the group, which will help them put this miserable performance behind them.

If they play this poorly in the Turkish Super Lig against Rizespor when league action resumes this weekend, they will lose yet again in front of their own fans in Istanbul.

Coach Hamza Hamzaoglu has to field the players in a 4-4-2 diamond to allow Goran Pandev and Umut Bulut to team up on offense in the absence of Burak Yilmaz, who is out injured for roughly one month. Bulut can run back as he normally does to help win back possession, while Pandev can take the reins when it comes to finishing.

The 4-2-3-1 is a great formation, but the team needs more creativity as it is becoming easier to defend, even against lesser teams. If Hamzaoglu goes with the diamond, his team will get right back on track.
