Styles make fights, as they say. However, style matchups apply to many other sports, too, and the Norwich City vs. Arsenal Premier League game is going to be a perfect illustration of that on Sunday. Both the Gunners and the Canaries have only won one of their last three EPL fixtures, but it will be Arsenal who pick up the win on this occasion.
Norwich came into the league with an admirable offensive approach, but it didn’t get the EPL new boys very far. Two wins from the first 10 games set the alarm bells ringing for Alex Neil, and the Canaries boss has since tweaked things to give the team more defensive solidity. However, home games are always more difficult to be defensive in than away fixtures because of the expectations of the crowd.
At home against Arsenal, Norwich will be more like the expansive attacking Norwich that first arrived in the EPL, and the Gunners are going to be delighted with that. The away team will be praying that Norwich come out and attack like they have done previously, and that the crowd will be urging them on to do so.
The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla have the pace and technique to be lethal if given time and space to play, and that should be the case at Carrow Road. It’s the deep-sitting, counter-attacking teams that the Gunners struggle with more. Arsene Wenger packs his team with attack-minded players and, on occasion, it does come back to haunt him.
But against Norwich, his team are going to thrive in the type of game they will find themselves in. There really aren’t too many worse style matchups for Norwich at home — styles don’t just make fights.
