Going three games without a win is bad enough, but the 4-1 demolition that West Ham United were subject to against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was the brutal explanation mark on the Hammers’ recent form. It’s now time for the West Ham players to react and show they have the heart and the pride to go with the pace and the flair they have shown in the early goings of the season.
All was going well for Slaven Bilic in his first season at the club. The last three games have been much more testing, however. On Sunday, his team play host to West Bromwich Albion, and only a win will suffice. There has to be a reaction from the Hammers players after last week’s dismantling, and especially at home.
The Baggies have only scored three goals away from home all season, so the home team do not need to worry too much about that side of things. It’s the air-tight defense that West Ham need to worry about breaking down, and the early-season form of the Hammers suggest they are adept at scoring and opening up defenses.
West Ham are among the highest scorers in the league, so there’s really no excuse if they cannot get the job done on Sunday. The loss of Dimitri Payet is obvious, and that will have a negative effect on the team’s attack, but it’s not Manchester City, Manchester United or Arsenal they are coming up against. It’s a team that has scored three away goals all season — West Ham have netted 13 away and 11 at home.
Bilic will be looking for a reaction from his players. We’ve all seen the attacking flair, but now it’s time to see the heart and the competitive spirit amongst the team. The players’ pride should be dented after last week’s defeat, and if that pride doesn’t show against West Brom on Sunday, then it’s a bad sign for this Hammers team.
