While practicing in Portugal, Bas Dost suffered an injury to his foot less than two weeks before the Bundesliga restarts. Wolfsburg is now in a tough situation as their top scorer will need surgery and is out for at least six weeks. With the Champions League knockout rounds looming and Nicklas Bendtner being pursued by other teams, Wolfsburg must make signing a striker a top priority.
Wolfsburg will up the price on Bendtner, who is being strongly linked to Newcastle. Bendtner has played in 10 Bundesliga games this season and recorded two goals. He has four goals in all competitions this season, but has not been a big part of Wolfsburg’s plans. Bendtner called his current situation “unsustainable,” so a temporarily heightened role may not be enough to keep him with the team.
This puts all of the burden on Max Kruse. He recently returned from a patellar tendon injury, but has participated in training this week. Kruse is likely in Wolfsburg’s future plans. so the coaches will be fine with him shouldering the load. However, they must decide if Dost will be a part of this team in the future. That will likely determine the type of player they target this month.
If Wolfsburg is looking for a more permanent solution, they can focus on Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon. He is being courted by several teams and does not want to move to another team as a backup. Lacazette would likely challenge Kruse for playing time.
Bojan Krkic has a release clause in his contract with Stoke City and could prove to be a good value for the money. The clause has a set value that will make it easier for Wolfsburg to compete for Krkic. A cheap option would be Emmanuel Adebayor. There would be no transfer fee for Adebayor, but he would rather go back to England.
Wolfsburg does have two other forwards training with the first team. However, they are unproven and this is a vital time for the German side. They need to bolster their forward core and only have a few days to do it.
