With all the corruption, inequality, shady corporate deals and blatant racism in soccer across the world, it is easy to forget what the game can truly mean. Robert Earnshaw gave everyone a gentle reminder in his heartfelt retirement letter. Earnshaw retires a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS after gallivanting across the world. Thankfully the 18-year veteran shared his thoughts with us all to provide a perspective that was more than needed.
Earnshaw’s words show he is grateful for his career that spanned 11 clubs in six countries, especially after losing his father at an early age and spending part of his childhood in an African coal mine village. He tried to thank everyone that he has ever had contact with in the game and that was repaid on social media with many well wishes coming his way.

Earnshaw’s retirement letter was a reminder that soccer can create so much good and it can come in different forms for different people. Earnshaw says:
In a way, football has been like a father to me. It has taught me about life, about working hard and staying focused. Football has taught me about the world, about religion, about nationalities and communities and how regardless of our numerous backgrounds we can all come together to play the game we all love.
Every word he says is true. The sport does teach us all something, whether we play or watch. It is the world’s game that gives us all a common ground.
Soccer brings together people from all walks of life. Thanks to Robert Earnshaw for the reminder.
