New Era (again) for Manchester United, as Rúben Amorim takes over as manager on Nov. 11
The 39-year-old comes in after leading Sporting Lisbon to two titles in four seasons
Everyone knew it was going to be hard to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager of Manchester United.
But could anyone have guess that the Red Devils would be onto their 10th manager since Ferguson retired at the top of the game in 2013?
David Moyes
Ryan Giggs
Louis van Gaal
Jose Mourinho
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Michael Carrick

And now, (the one that is going to finally break the title drought?), Rúben Amorim.

Amorim was announced Friday by Manchester United, and he will begin on November 11 during the international break. He will remain in charge of Sporting Clube de Portugal for the next three matches: against Estrela Amadora tonight, Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, and then Braga on Saturday.
A United statement read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.
“He has signed a contract until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting CP.
“Rúben is one of the most exciting and highly-rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Rúben joins.”
How will Ruben Amorim set-up at Manchester United
It’s no secret that replacing Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United’s manager was always going to be a monumental challenge. When Ferguson stepped down in 2013 after an illustrious 26-year reign, the club was at the pinnacle of English football, boasting a rich legacy of success and numerous trophies. However, few could have predicted that the Red Devils would cycle through ten different managers in the years that followed, each facing their own struggles to replicate Ferguson’s extraordinary success.
The managerial saga began with David Moyes, who was appointed with much fanfare but ultimately struggled to adapt to the pressures of managing such a storied club. After a tumultuous season, he was replaced by club legend Ryan Giggs on an interim basis. Louis van Gaal brought a sense of hope with his tactical acumen, guiding the team to an FA Cup victory in 2016, yet his tenure was marred by inconsistent performances.
Next came the charismatic Jose Mourinho, who delivered a Europa League title and a League Cup, temporarily restoring some pride to the club. However, his often contentious relationship with players and management led to another exit. Ole Gunnar Solskjær, a fan favorite, took the helm and revitalized the squad, achieving a memorable run to the Champions League final. But the fairy tale was short-lived, and he too fell victim to the club’s ongoing struggles.
Following Solskjær, Michael Carrick served as caretaker, while Ralf Rangnick was brought in to implement a new style of play.
Erik ten Hag was the latest to take up the mantle, aiming to restore United’s competitive edge. However, despite a Carabao Cup crown in 2023 and a F.A. Cup win in 2024 against rivals Manchester City, even his efforts struggled to yield consistent results, leaving fans yearning for a return to glory.
Now, with the appointment of Rúben Amorim, the hope is that this could finally be the turning point for Manchester United. Amorim comes with a strong pedigree, having led Sporting Lisbon to multiple titles, and he carries the promise of a fresh perspective and renewed energy. The fans are hopeful that he can navigate the challenges that have plagued his predecessors and break the club’s title drought, which has lingered since their last Premier League victory in 2013.
As Amorim prepares to take the reins, the Manchester United faithful are holding their breath, hoping that he can usher in a new era of success and restore the club to its former glory. Only time will tell if he is the one to finally end the cycle of uncertainty and lead the Red Devils back to the pinnacle of English football.
