CARDINALS, MOTTE SIGN ONE YEAR DEAL
St. Louis, Mo – The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a one year, $1.95 million contract with closer Jason Motte, according to CBSsports.com. The Cardinals have confirmed the length of Motte’s contract via Twitter; he made $435,000 last year.
The 29 year old pitcher was drafted in the 19th round by the Cardinals in 2003. Motte made his debut with the Cardinals in 2008, racking up 188 innings pitched with 187 career strikeouts and an era of 2.92 since that time.
Despite not officially being named the Cardinals “closer” last year, Motte made 25 appearances in the ninth inning striking out 20 of a possible 86 batters. Overall, he made 78 appearances during the 2011 season with an ERA of 2.25 in 68 innings while racking up a career high 9 saves and 63 strike outs.
Motte was a staple in the Cardinals bullpen during the teams drive to a World Series championship. He made 5 saves in his 13 games during the postseason, including pitching the final inning of Game 7 against the Texas Rangers.
The contract helps the Cardinals and Motte avoid the arbitration process. Newly named Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has already endorsed Jason Motte as the 2012 closer.
