Redbirds Trim to 32; Sanchez Sent to Minors
St. Louis, Mo – The Cardinal’s right handed reliever, Eduardo Sanchez, is looking at spending the first half of the season the same way that he spent the latter half of 2011; not on the Major League roster. Sanchez was among a total of seven moves made by St. Louis today in Jupiter, according to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Chris Carpenter and Skip Schumaker were both officially marked to be on the disabled list while Mark Hamilton and Matt Adams were both sent back down to Memphis. Alex Cora and Koyie Hill, two Spring Training, non-roster invitees were also kindly given a train ticket home.
Sanchez made 26 appearances last season, pitching 30 innings while claiming 3 wins and 1 loss in relief while posting up a 1.80 ERA. He was placed on the DL last season after facing inflammation and discomfort in his right shoulder. Sanchez was dominant this spring having thrown 8 innings in 7 appearances and holding opponents scoreless as well as to a .154 batting average. The Venezuelan native managed to strike out 14 batters while only walking 5 members of the opposition, but 4 others were victims of being hit by stray pitches.
First base prospect, Mark Hamilton, failed to make the most out of his twelve at bats in nine games having hit just .167 with a .250 slugging percentage, making contact with the ball only twice this spring. Hamilton did manage to come around and score three times and drive in two runs while drawing four walks; the problem is that he also struck out four times.
Matt Adams managed to shake Cardinal Nation this spring, but he will gather a little more seasoning in the minor leagues before St. Louis fans have a chance to start chanting his name after homeruns. Adams rocked a .278 average and .528 slugging percentage through 14 games and 36 at bats in the lovely Florida weather. He knocked home eight runs while crossing the plate four times himself on ten hits including a double, a triple, and two homeruns. Patience seems to be the lone problem with the young 23 year old who struck out ten times while only drawing one walk.
The turning away of veterans Koyie Hill, a 33 year old catcher, and Alex Cora, a 36 year old infielder, speak more towards the skill of the organization’s younger players than anything else. With players like utility infielder Daniel Descalso, shortstop Tylere Greene, and catcher Tony Cruz on the cusp of becoming impact players at the Major League level, the Cardinals appear to be choosing player development over the “win now” philosophy that we witnessed last season; this is reiterated by the lack of interest in Roy Oswalt to replace an injured Chris Carpenter and, instead, choosing to call upon Lance Lynn to start in the former Cy Young Award winner’s place.
The Cardinals are now at 32 players on their Major League roster.
