Sleeper Picks the St. Louis Rams Will Look at in the NFL Draft
Much of the pre-draft buzz surrounds those presumed as the prohibitive favorites to be chosen in round one on Thursday, April 26th. The majority of the picks for every team this year will happen beyond the first round however, and the St. Louis Rams are looking to fill several obvious needs with those later round selections.
One of the needs at the forefront of the club’s attention has is punter. The position may not be the sexiest spot on the field, but every team needs one and special teams can have a huge impact on the outcomes of football games.
The main candidates to potentially fill the void on fourth downs are Bryan Anger, a 3-time all-conference performer out of California, Drew Butler of Georgia who has great bloodlines with his father Kevin Butler kicking with the Chicago Bears, and Shaun Powell, Florida State’s first consensus All-American punter in school history with a 47.0 yard average last season. Each of these guys could be the one called upon to bail the team out of field position battles throughout the 2011 season, but don’t look for the Rams to spend any picks higher than the 6th round on any of them.
Place kicker could also be under review in this year’s draft as the Rams have a number of picks to work with in the 2012 selection. Current kicker Josh Brown is in the final year of his contract and possibly on his way out after this season. Perhaps a dark horse to be selected in the latter stages of the draft as a developmental kicker is Missouri Western State’s Greg Zuerlein. The team held a private workout for the record-setting kicker who made 21 consecutive field goals last season including nine during that streak which were from 50 yards or more.
Special teams takes a backseat in most draft discussions, but just because these players are likely to be selected beyond the glamor rounds of the upcoming draft doesn’t mean they won’t make a significant impact at the NFL level.

A better idea would be to pick up Ryan Broyles. He will go cheap since he tore his ACL, but the NCAA all time leading receiver that use to play with Sam Bradford would be a smart pick. Can you imagine the traffic from OK to St Louis to watch those games???
