Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman Has Lost Weight
With OTA’s just around the corner, everyone in the NFL is trying to get back into shape. That includes Josh Freeman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to general manager Mark Dominik, Freeman has lost 20 pounds so far this offseason, and is trying to do everything he can to prevent another terrible season.
Dominik spoke to Steve Wyche of NFL.com recently, and that is when he told Wyche about Freeman’s weight-loss. According to Dominik, Josh Freeman decided to lose weight on his own and wasn’t pressured by any of the new coaches to do so. Freeman took the initiative to do this on his own in an attempt to get better.
“The last couple of years, he’s been playing around 255-260. Right now, he’s sitting downstairs weighing about 235-238. He’s getting his body right, working on getting more mobility and better conditioned and buying in, heart and soul, to how and what Mike Sullivan is and wants to be as offensive coordinator,” Dominik said. It’s true that Freeman has been more of a pocket passer early in his career and losing weight should help him with his footwork and his ability to get out of the pocket. Bettering his footwork will definitely help with accuracy, something Freeman struggled with last year.
In 2011, Freeman threw for a career-high in yards with 3,592, but also threw 22 interceptions. Clearly, he regressed from his impressive campaign in 2010, which is when he threw 25 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Now that the front office has surrounded Freeman with weapons, there should be no more excuses and he needs to execute much better this season.
It’s too early to call Freeman a bust by any means, but another down season could start to worry the ever so fragile fan base down in Tampa.
