Though not quite official, reports coming out of College Station are that the Aggies plan to fire head coach Mike Sherman after a disappointing 6-6 season.

Kirk Bohls of the Austin-American Statesman reported the news.

Texas A&M has decided to fire football Mike Sherman but has not yet notified him, a prominent Aggie source just told me.

Texas A&M started the season with high hopes, ranked as the 8th and 9th best team in the Coaches and AP polls. They were serious contenders for both the Big 12 title and National title.

Finishing the season .500 after those expectations wasn’t going to cut it in Aggie Land. This is a school that fired R.C. Slocum after a couple bad years, and he coached them through the best stretch in their history.

According to Bohls, Houston’s Kevin Sumlin is the front runner.

Houston's Kevin Sumlin would emerge as the A&M frontrunner. "He's the favorite of Aggie Nation," the source says.

I imagine Aggies would have loved to stick it to Texas Tech and have the program hire Mike Leach, but he signed the dotted line with Washington State this morning.

The search likely won’t take very long, but the key will be to make a hire that can keep the top 10 recruiting class in tact. Sherman may have been a bad game day coach, but he could sure recruit, and the next coach will be thankful of that.
