Texas comes up short against Oregon State
Rick Barnes and the Longhorns basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday losing 100-95 in a close game verses Oregon State.
This was the first time the Beavers have beaten the Longhorns since 1967, and it came in the semifinals of the TicketCity Legends classic. It was hard fought game to the very end, but the Longhorns seemed to be hurting themselves all night.
Five Texas players fouled out of the game before it was all said and done with. The Longhorns also committed 23 turnovers and sent Oregon State to the line 43 times. It’s always going to be pretty hard to win while making that many mistakes throughout the course of a game.
The Longhorns had a couple bright spots, being led once again by J’Covan Brown who has been playing great through the first three games of the season so far. He led the team in most categories Saturday, scoring 25 points while also having six rebounds, nine assists, and three steals.
Sheldon McClellan also put in a good performance coming off the bench getting 12 points and five rebounds. He also saw a lot more of the court Saturday with Myck Kabongo and the rest of the Longhorns being in foul trouble most of the night. Brown and Kabongo were the only two starters not to foul out of the game however.
Anytime you commit 35 fouls in a game it’s going to be a long night. With lack of experience this year on the court, hopefully Barnes can get the team better prepared and eliminate many of the careless turnovers and fouls Texas had in this game.
The Beavers were led with a career high performance from their junior guard Jared Cunningham, who put up 37 points while also contributing with nine rebounds and three assists. 20 of Cunningham’s points came from the free throw line. They also had a great showing from sophomore guard Devon Collier who had 17 points and seven rebounds.
Texas’ post players still have a lot of work to do. Alexis Wangmene showed some signs of being where he needs to be, posting 11 points and four rebounds, while Chapman had just six points and two rebounds. Both of these players will need to have a bigger impact on the boards this year if Texas wants to have any chance of being successful this season.
The Longhorns have a chance to end the tournament on a positive note with a win against North Carolina State tonight. NC State suffered a similar defeat to Vanderbilt in their semifinal match, losing 79-86.
This should be a great game, and just another chance to measure how good this young Texas team can be this season.
