Texas basketball easily handles Texas State
In one of the best team efforts of the season, the Texas basketball team beat their rivals from down the road, Texas State, 86-52.
In the 46th meeting between these two teams, Texas grabbed their 23rd consecutive win over Texas State who hasn’t defeated the Longhorns since 1937.
It’s only a 30 minute drive for the Bobcats coming from San Marcos, but surprisingly no players from either team are originally from the Austin area to give this game a true rivalry feel. Jonathan Holmes was the closest, coming from the San Antonio area.
The Longhorns took a couple minutes to get into the groove of the game, but played great team defense and forced the Bobcats into a horrendous shooting night. Texas State shot an awful 25% from the field going 15-58 on the night and really had no answers as the game went along.
They only had three field goals made at the halfway point, and if they didn’t get to the line, as often, it may have been a lot worse than the 19 points they managed to get.
Texas had five players in double digits Saturday night and will hope to get more performances like this as the season goes on. They were led by freshman Julien Lewis with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half when the Longhorns drained six 3-pointers right out of halftime.
Lewis had a great night shooting, as did the rest of the team, which shot 56% from the floor.
Other Longhorn players in double digits included, Myck Kabongo with 13 points and seven assists. He continues to get better each game, and seems to be on the verge of a double-double each night he steps on the court.
J’Covan Brown had an unusually quiet night with 11 points, but with everyone else shooting as well as they were, he didn’t really need to take the game over himself. Sheldon McClellan and Sterling Gibbs, who came off the bench, combined for 22 points and 10 rebounds, also helped their teammates out in a big way.
This game was a huge confidence booster for the Longhorn big men, Alexis Wangmene and Clint Chapman. Wangmene had 11 points and six rebounds, while Chapman had his best game of the year with nine points and seven rebounds. Both were very aggressive this game, and they’ll hope this style of play continues.
Texas State’s senior guard Eddie Rios led the Bobcats with 11 points.
The Longhorns face Nicholls State on Tuesday night with another great opportunity to keep their home winning streak in tact and keep the momentum going.
