Could Bobby Petrino’s misstep with DGB open door for Texas?

Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino was set to meet with consensus national No. 1 recruit Dorial Green-Beckham at his home in Springfield, Missouri. Turns out, that visit cannot, and will not happen, due to a “situation” that occurred during a no-contact period earlier this year.

Evidently, Petrino “accidentally bumped into Green-Beckham” during the American Football Coaches Association conference which happened to be taking place at San Antonio’s Alamodome around the same time as the Army All-American game for which the uber-talented wideout was in town.

This incidental contact– while on the surface seems harmless enough– could be interpreted as illegal contact during a recruiting dead period by the NCAA, and accordingly the Razorbacks aren’t taking any chances and are being proactive by canceling Patrino’s in-home visit with DGB.

The interesting co-incidence here is that University of Texas head coach Mack Brown was originally set to meet with Green-Beckham for lunch on Thursday, to take his best shot at selling him on Longhorns football and the city of Austin. It’s possible now that Brown could in fact spend more time during the day with DGB on Thursday which could be a huge positive for the Texas head coach.

While it’s probably far fetched to suggest that Texas could have been behind the breaking of the news regarding the incidental meeting between Petrino and DGB, stranger things have certainly happened before. It’s doubtful that this is the case, however, and more likely just a confluence of circumstances which could help the Longhorns sway the nation’s No. 1 football recruit toward the Forty Acres.

  1. DEA says:

Incorrect. While Petrino didn’t meet with DGB, the Hogs recruiting coordinator and other asst. coaches did. Try again.

lol at the guy’s comment above me ^^^^ hahaha
This guy sounds so defensive and the truth is, and any good Arkansas Razorback fan knows this. Arkansas is the University of Texas’ little brother and ALWAYS will be. Check the records, stats, game film, nfl player development, history of the program/tradition, facilities, academic reputation as a school, party school reputation, and location of both schools and you will see with or without DGB. Texas is still full of 5 star talent and a 5 star institution. While Arky on the other hand is probably having the best 3 yr stretch in program history so I’ll let them feel good about their program for now

Alec,it’s pretty clear why Texas has been successful in the past,it’s the leading University in one of the largest states in America.Arkansas on the other hand is a small state with limited financial resources & a smaller population. The facts are they have done very well in the past with what they had.Now Arkansas has an innovative coach who is committed, the buyout for the next few years is 18 Million,Bobby’s not going anywhere.Recruits coming to visit call the facilities the best they have seen, this is after they have been to the likes of Texas ,Alabama & other top programs.A new 35 million dollar football operations center is under way.Petrino made it clear to A.D. Long that he wanted the best in sports science available, and Jeff Long is a technology nut who is happy to oblige. In most families big brother usually ends up getting his tail whipped by little brother in the end.
