As the letters from Longhorn commitments trickled into university offices this morning, there were very few surprises, as is usually the case where Texas is concerned considering that most of Mack Brown’s recruiting classes are wrapped up long before Signing Day arrives. All of the recruits who were expected to sign with Texas did with much fanfare, but little mystery.
Until rumors began circulating that Texas could be in for a rare Signing Day surprise.
Early Monday, various recruiting site began to report rumblings that Texas could still be in play for Torshiro Davis, an LSU commit.
Davis hails from the heart of Tiger Territory, just down the road from LSU
Ranked as the #3 player in Louisiana, both the Longhorns and the Tigers recruited Davis hard, along with other elite programs such as Alabama, Auburn, and Oklahoma. The highly sought after recruit was selected to participate in the US Army All-American Bowl earlier this month.
The outside linebacker is expected to move to defensive end in college. His greatest asset his his strength, which gives him a burst on the outside edge making him a dangerous pass rusher to opposing offenses.
Davis commited to his home-state school early in the process, but continued to take official visits throughout, all the while remaining solid to LSU. Anytime rumors of interest in other schools surfaced, they were immediately shot down.
Due in large part to the relationship Davis established with current Texas defensive tackles coach, Bo Davis, when he was still at Alabama, Texas’ name began to surface as a possibility. He made an official visit to The University of Texas, though it was reported once again that in the end that, although the visit went well, Torshiro would stick with his commitment to LSU with Texas seemingly all but conceding to the Tigers.
It was being reported as late as yesterday evening that Davis would stick with LSU. However, with rumors of a last-minute switch swirling, Davis sat down at his signing ceremony in front of an undoubtedly strong Tiger crowd with three hats on the table before him: LSU, Alabama, and Texas.
At 11:07, Davis made it official.
He is now a proud member of the Texas Longhorn Class of 2012.
