Texas Longhornsco-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin threw Longhorn fans into a frenzy early this evening when he announced that quarterbacks David Ash and Case McCoy would both see the field in the Horns’ season-opener against the Wyoming Cowboys on September 1.
Texas fans, who have grown weary of the two-quarterback system which the Longhorns employed last season with very little success, were hoping that one quarterback would separate himself from the other and be named as the sole starting QB. With Harsin’s comments, however, Longhorn spiraled into a bit of panic, saying to themselves, “Ahh!! Not this again!”
To this I have just one thing to say.
Everyone, calm down.
I don’t think Harsin meant that the Longhorns would employ a typcial two-quarterback system all season.
Instead, we have heard continued reports that there are different “packages” for each quarterback which play to the strengths of each. I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see McCoy on the field in select packages, but I would hardly consider this a “two-quarterback” system.
Nearly all the reports coming out of the spring, summer, and recent preseason camps have Ash getting the bulk of the snaps against the first-team offense. And while he hasn’t been stellar, most accounts have him as being solid and managing the game well which is really all that is needed this season for the Longhorns.
Perhaps he hasn’t separated himself as much as people may have liked, but there has been indeed some slight separation.
Additionally, fans must remember that this isn’t the first time that Harsin has publicly stated that both quarterbacks will play; he said the same thing prior to the Holiday Bowl last season when Ash took every snap of the game while McCoy watched from the sidelines.
In my opinion, the starting job is Ash’s to lose.
Does that mean McCoy won’t play? No. In fact, I believe he will. McCoy has srengths of his own that should be used in certain situations. That said, I don’t think it will be the way it was last season when the two quarterbacks were shuffled in and out before those watching could even know what was happening. If it does indeed come to that, it could be a long season for the Texas Longhorns.
