Texas Rangers Sign Nelson Cruz to 2-Year, $16 Million Deal
The Texas Rangers have avoided a scheduled arbitration hearing with Nelson Cruz by signing the outfielder to a new two-year, $16 million contract. When the two sides exchanged arbitration figures in January, Cruz asked for $7.5 million while the Rangers offered $5.5 million. Cruz came out on the winning end of this deal and will play in Texas at least through the 2013 season.
Cruz really cemented himself in the Rangers’ organization when he broke a championship series record with six home runs en route to earning ALCS MVP honors in 2011. Josh Hamilton’s recent alcohol relapse and sex tape allegations might have had something to do with Cruz’s new contract; the team was in the process of signing Hamilton a new long-term deal until the news broke. Now Cruz has the new contract, albeit only a two-deal.
Now the only arbitration player the Rangers have left to sign is catcher Mike Napoli, who played a huge role in the team playing in its second consecutive World Series last season. The Hamilton situation is going to create some issues, but Cruz is signed with Napoli on deck. Texas is slowly but surely getting things ready for another title run.
