Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish Wins AL Rookie of the Month Award for April
Texas Rangers new starting pitcher Yu Darvish is on a hot streak like no other and more than just Rangers fans are noticing. After posting a 4-0 mark in five starts, Darvish was named the AL rookie of the month for April on Wednesday.
Darvish’s ERA is 2.18, good for fifth-best in the AL and his four wins tied for league lead in April. However, these solid stats don’t speak for Darvish’s historical performance thus far; he became just the sixth rookie in the last half century to win at least four games without a loss in the month of April.
Needless to say, it appears as if the Rangers have found a viable replacement in the rotation for the recently departed C.J. Wilson. Speaking of which, Darvish is scheduled to start against Wilson when the Rangers host the Angels next Friday, which is sure to draw a near-record crowd at the Ballpark in Arlington.
Darvish isn’t the only Ranger to win an AL award for the month of April – Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton took home the AL Player of the Month award as well. During the fourth month of the year and the first of baseball, Hamilton batted .395 while jacking nine home runs, batting in 25 runs and recording 64 total bases. Hamilton did lead and still leads the league in all of those categories.
Despite two straight losses to the Toronto Blue Jays since Darvish’s last start, the Rangers have been on fire as a team, recording the best start in franchise history this season. Of course, neither Darvish, Hamilton nor any other member of the organization will be satisfied unless the Rangers win the World Series this year.
