Dustin McGowan Broken Again; Shut Down For Two Weeks
At this point, you have to wonder whether the make-good story of McGowan may just be reaching its conclusion before it even had a chance to really get started. The Toronto Blue Jays‘ projected 5th starter heading into this season have once again been shut down due to problems with his shoulder.
The news comes from MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm, who says that McGowan experienced soreness in his right (pitching) shoulder, and have been shut down for at least two weeks, and possibly much longer. According to Chisholm, McGowan has also visited the good Dr. Death James Andrews, who declared that there is no structural damage, shining a tiny bit of light in what’s looking to be a pretty dark tunnel for the righty. As expected, there is currently no timeline for McGowan’s recovery, though this is obviously much more serious of a setback than when McGowan hurt his foot in spring training.
McGowan, as you know, recently signed a 2-year extension with the Blue Jays, a move that I thought was a bit curious, considering the significant risks that the team was carrying with the pitcher’s history of health. Obviously, you have to feel for the guy, but I don’t think that this injury could be called a surprise for even the most ardent of McGowan fans. Obviously, we’ll await more news from the team about the severity of McGowan’s injury before speculating on what the future holds for the 30-year old, but right now, things aren’t looking too good.
