2012 MLB Predictions: AL East

The American League East could very well be the toughest division to predict a winner, hands down.  The Baltimore Orioles will not be competing for a title any time soon, but the other four teams all have a fighting chance.

The Toronto Blue Jays are a franchise moving in the right direction, and they could play the role of the spoiler this season.

It was a disappointing end to the 2011 season for the Boston Red Sox, to say the least.  They have the hitting, but starting pitching should be a legitimate concern.   The Red Sox will compete, but ultimately they’ll finish behind the next two teams below.

Joe Madden and the Tampa Bay Rays squeaked in to the postseason last year to steal the last wildcard spot away from the Red Sox, and they’ll most definitely go again this season thanks in large part to their excellent starting rotation.   However, they won’t be because they win the division.  The Rays will win the second wildcard spot once again finishing behind the New York Yankees.

You haven’t been able to say the Yankees have starting pitching depth in their rotation for a while now, but with the addition of one of the best young arms in the game, Michael Pineda, the Yanks have it.  Of course they rake as well.  It will be critical for veteran Alex Rodriguez to stay healthy, and if he does, this lineup will be dangerous and production enough to win an AL East title in 2012.
