Demarcus Cousins‘s breakup with the Sacramento Kings is like that one couple that were together much longer than anyone had expected or hoped the’d be. This relationship is an embarrassment to both parties and the NBA as a whole. The most recent twist has Kings coach Keith Smart telling Demarcus Cousins to stay in the locker room after a frustrating first half effort against the Los Angeles Clippers. During halftime the two reportedly got in quite a verbal spat, both men leaving unhappy.
Well, unhappy or not the Kings are on the fast track to yet another NBA lottery pick. At 9-19, something has to give. This club has not a winning season since 2005. Potentially eight seasons of being in the cellar cannot bode well for anyone who still believes in the purple and white.
The talent that Cousins posses is through the roof, hence why this is such a frustrating dispute. Cousins is averaging 16.6 PPG and 9.5 REB in 2012-13. Now, after averaging a double double and leading the league in Offensive Rebounds in 2011-12, Cousins has all the potential in the world. Of course, Cousins on court prowess is undermined by his inability to mesh with coaches and players around him.
Being the 5th overall pick in 2010, the Kings knew of Cousins immaturity. However, this deal has turned very raw and very fast. How many more people is Cousins going to upset while in Sacramento before his time is up?
There are three sides to every story: side one, side two and the truth. At the end of the day, the two sides in this debacle need to call it a quits. Although I’m sure the Kings want to squeeze every drop of production out of Cousins, it just isn’t a fit.
