Once a hot commodity on the free agent market, Eric Wright is now just trying to prove he can still play in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers tried to boost their secondary by trading for Wright in July, but the deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell through when the 28-year-old failed a physical. Needless to say, Tampa Bay wasn’t happy and cut the once promising cornerback shortly thereafter. San Francisco ended up getting the better end of that deal by signing Wright to a free agent contract on Thursday.
Wright has shown a lot of promise throughout his career in Cleveland, Detroit and Tampa Bay, but he’s never been able to break out. Now with the defending NFC champs who boast one of the NFL’s best defenses, Wright has no excuse not to reach his potential.
With Chris Culliver out for the season with a torn ACL, the 49ers have a job open at their No. 3 cornerback spot and Wright is now vying for it along with Tramaine Brock, Nnamdi Asomugha and Perrish Cox. San Francisco already has two solid starters in Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown and now the competition for the third spot should ensure the Niners don’t have secondary problems again this postseason.
