Whenever you turn on the television, someone is talking about the surging U.S. Men’s National Team.
It’s been fascinating to see a soccer team take over the headlines as the sport has yet to take off in the United States, but still is getting plenty of coverage. Either way, Jozy Altidore is doing his best to make soccer games must-watch stuff and his recent outing against Bosnia on Wednesday all but broke Twitter. In fact, the gravity-defying penalty kick that Altidore notched caused even the most devout soccer haters to drop their jaw and applaud.
However, before we start calling this USMNT that has won 12 games in a row some kind of savior, let’s keep in mind what time of year it is.
The MLB season is in the dog days of summer, so while the divisional races are shaping up there really isn’t much excitement on the diamond.
The NBA season is a few months away from getting started back up and the always-exciting free agency period has wrapped up.
The NFL season is a month away, but even fantasy football drafts and preseason games are starting to get hot once again.
My point is this: as soon as the 2013 NFL season starts back up, all of this hype surrounding the USMNT will be gone — it’s just the nature of the beast. On the other hand, this exciting soccer team gives us all something to watch until that first regular-season tackle is made.
