Mike Shanahan Represents New Era of Stability for Washington Redskins
If the Redskins ever want to get on track, it will start with keeping a coach more than two or three years. Mike Shanahan can be that coach, if nothing happens in the off season.
Let’s face it, nothing is going to happen. That would be almost devastating at this point.
After going through some of the exit interviews last week, I realized this is not a team that’s going around hanging their heads in shame.
As a matter of fact, they sounded quite excited about the 2012 season.
Why is that?
Considering the last game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles I saw two reasons: Roy Helu and Evan Royster. They represent a youthful and aggressive approach to the Redskins offense. Fast, tough, and they don’t need a lot of time to do a great deal of damage.
It’s exciting to watch them play. Beyond those two, there are other reasons, but those are mine.
The team has a chance for something it hasn’t experienced in a few years: Stability. It begins with Mike Shanahan. Forget this year for a moment. He’s not the “lost in the headlights” leadership of Jim Zorn. He’s not a Joe Gibbs, but we are certain to see a man who is passionate about building the franchise. While he did admit it may take longer to do, when you look at the team’s overall look, it does look a lot better. Does the record show that? No. They got dismantled this past season. Shanahan responded with four words: They need more depth.
He’s right.
This is one of those times where Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder will have to just step back and let their head coach do his job and not worry about his job.
Mike Shanahan knows what he wants to do, but it’s a waiting game. This isn’t a coach looking to build a resume, this is one who is adding to it.
If he’s able to lead the Redskins to the postseason in 2012, then sky’s the limit for Shanahan.
At the top of the year, he was quoted by ESPN saying,”Even though the record may not show it, we’re a much better football team than we were a year ago.”
I agree, and you should too. We’re close to seeing a team poised to surprise the league. It’s a matter of perspective, and patience.
And for Washington, it’s a start. The opposite of that is chaos and confusion. The Redskins can only move up from here. This team is positive, motivated, and are ready to work for a better season.
If Detroit can do it, so can we.
