Baylor Pro Day: What Should Redskins Nation Observe when Robert Griffin III Throws?
The Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III is set to throw under the spotlight for the first time since his Bowl Game. Baylor’s Pro Day begins at 12pm today, and RG3 will do his best acting job, while continuing to handling his business as if he doesn’t know which NFL Team will draft him. With the Washington Redskins now picking 2nd overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, it’s no secret, RG3 is essentially a Redskin.
So what exactly should Redskins Nation observe while watching Griffin throw today?
We already know he has a great deep ball… We already know he’s a freak athlete. However, there are a few things I’ll be looking forward to seeing:
- Under Center
- Drop-backs
- Turning his back after a fake RB exchange
- Short and Intermediate Route Tree
- Anticipation
- Leadership
RG3 went under center sporadically at Baylor. However, he did it more often than people give him credit for. Today, I want to see him take clean snaps and drops. 3 step, 5 step, etc… On play-action fakes, turning his back and being able to locate his receiver is important. That’s a staple in the Mike Shanahan offense.
Short and Intermediate passes are what I like to call, “Anticipation” routes. If there’s any known flaw to Griffin’s game, it’s anticipation; and that’s okay, because it’s fixable.
Short Routes:
- Slant
- Digs
- Hitch
- Quick out
Intermediate Routes:
- Hook
- In
- Out
Those are all routes successful NFL Qb’s must anticipate. Timing and rhythm is important in the Redskins offensive scheme.
Lastly, Leadership is something we all know Robert Griffin III has. In a pro day atmosphere, watching him take charge of the drills will be something special.
