The Washington Redskins’ other rookie quarterback – Kirk Cousins put on a show against the Chicago Bears in week 2 of the pre-season, racking up 264 yards on 18/23 pass attempts and 3 touchdowns. All in one half of play, Cousins looked poised and polished helping the Redskins comeback from a shaky first half of football.
Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts Washington decided to feature Rex Grossman after deciding not to play him against the Bears. Cousins didn’t garnish a snap until seconds before the game was over.
Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed after Saturday’s game that Robert Griffin III would not play in the upcoming season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When asked Monday if Cousins would start, Shanahan said – “I’m not going to go into playing time but he will start.”
Teams around the league had to trim their rosters from 90 to 75 players before 4pm Monday evening, and Shanahan held another presser to discuss the decisions that were made. In saying that, the irony came when Shanahan was immediately asked how much playing time the quarterbacks will receive during Wednesday’s match-up against the Bucs. Shanahan responded, “You’ve got to come to the game to find out.” That’s a typical eyebrow raising Shanahan comment right there, and it opens the door to the question, could Kirk Cousins play a full game Wednesday?
Three days removed from the most hyped pre-season game in NFL History, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cousins received significant playing time. If all things go right, Cousins won’t take another snap until next year’s pre-season. Not to mention, the team just released Jonathan Crompton leaving only Rex Grossman and Kirk Cousins as the only Qbs available with Griffin not playing. I’d expect Cousins to play most, if not all of this upcoming game against the Bucs.
