Former Texas PG Sterling Gibbs Transfers to Seton Hall
Former Texas Longhorns point guard Sterling Gibbs was the odd-man out for a team dubbed by many as the “Baby Horns” during the 2011-2012 campaign. With the majority of the guard minutes occupied by freshman phenom Myck Kabongo, Shelden McClellan, and NBA-bound junior J’Covan Brown, there just wasn’t enough time available for Gibbs to show the Texas coaching staff what he could do.
Citing homesickness and a desire to be closer to his family, several reports have emerged that the 6’1″ speedster will transfer to Seton Hall University and could be eligible to play during the 2012-2013 season should his request for a hardship waiver be granted by the NCAA. If the NCAA does not grant the waiver, Gibbs will see his first action for the Pirates in the 2013-2014 season.
It had been rumored since Gibbs announced that he was leaving Texas that Seton Hall was the front-runner, something which was confirmed by several Pirates players and the local press:

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard targeted Gibbs to join the Pirates due to his outstanding shooting ability and the fact that he and 2013 mini-dynamo Aquille Carr could together be one of the strongest backcourt tandems in the Big East in coming years.
It’s a tough loss for Rick Barnes and the Texas Longhorns in terms of the lost depth at guard, but with the arrival of Javan Felix next fall, Myck Kabongo will have a worthy backup to come of the bench and spell him when necessary. Texas is accustomed to players transferring due to lack of playing time so Gibbs’ departure wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but an unfortunate situation nonetheless.
If Sterling Gibbs can ever reach his potential, and play at a level close to his older brother Ashton, the Seton Hall Pirates may have an unexpected diamond in the rough.
