Kaberle off to Carolina

Not long after the Bruins nabbed Joe Corvo away from Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes made their move, signing Tomas Kaberle away for three years and $12.75 million.

Considering the deals that were flying around when the free agency period opened on July 1, Kaberle’s looks fairly reasonable. He stays close to the annual average he was making under his last deal (signed with Toronto), and with the extended cap, he looks like an affordable option.

Carolina is hoping that his skills — puck containment and movement, making the first pass that gets the wheel rolling on a scoring chance — fits better within Paul Maurice‘s system than they did in Boston. Kaberle never looked too comfortable playing under Claude Julien, and indeed, it seemed to take him two months and three rounds into the playoffs to start to show the promise the Bruins saw when they gave up draft picks and prospect Joe Colborne for him in Februrary.

In Corvo, the Bruins have Kaberle’s replacement, a solid defenseman with offensive potential who can hold the fort until Steve Kampfer and Dougie Hamilton mature enough to assume the roll full-time.

The Bruins now have no other unrestricted free agents. Left wing Brad Marchand is a restricted free agent and has been tendered a qualifying offer.
