Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Cliff Lee Finally Picks Up First Win at Home in 2012
(Howard Smith/US PRESSWIRE)

Here’s a sentence Philadelphia Phillies fans never thought they would hear in late August: Cliff Lee picked up his first win at home during the 2012 regular season on Sunday during the team’s 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.

The left hander allowed one run and seven hits over seven solid innings while striking out five to help the Phillies complete the sweep over their division rivals along with picking up their fourth-straight win. With the victory, Philadelphia sits just six games below .500 with a 61-67 record with less than a week left in August. At this point, though, it may be a simple case of too little, too late for the five-time defending NL East champions.

Obviously, Lee picking up his first win at home on Sunday is just one of many examples of the type of frustrating season it’s been for the Phillies as they’ve struggled throughout most of 2012 while dealing with numerous injuries. While most players on Philadelphia’s roster have been dealing with frustrating injuries, Lee has just been frustrated over the lack of run support during some of his impressive outings.

It’s hard to believe a pitcher like Lee only had two wins on the season coming into Sunday. It may not seem like a huge deal, but it’s nice to know Lee can end this disappointing season on the note that he recorded at least one win at Citizens Bank Park in 2012.
