The Dallas Cowboys dodged a bullet.

When Dez Bryant went down with a knee injury during a preseason matchup with the San Diego Chargers on Saturday, it was feared that the wide receiver could be missing some serious playing time. Luckily for the Cowboys, an MRI showed that the inconsistent star suffered no tears.

According to the Cowboys’ official website, the MRI revealed patellar tendinitis in Bryant’s knee, an injury that should require only rest to recover from. The injury is commonly referred to as “jumper’s knee,” and shouldn’t limit Bryant to the sidelines for much longer.

Considered day-to-day, Bryant will likely miss the rest of the preseason as a precaution. With the playmaking abilities that the Cowboys’ promising receiver has shown in 2012, it would be in the team’s best interests to not rush him back onto the field.

To make matters worse, Bryant isn’t the only Cowboys wide receiver currently on the injured list. Shortly after Bryant went down, fellow pass-catchers Donavan Kemp (knee) and Andre Holmes (back) were forced out of Saturday’s game. Dallas was already lacking depth at the position and will now be forced to work with a short list of options.

In the meantime, other wide receivers hoping to earn a role with the Cowboys’ offense will get their opportunities to stand out. Cole Beasley, Kevin Ogletree, Raymond Radway and Dwayne Harris took the majority of the practice snaps on Monday. Rookie Danny Coale also returned to practice on Monday after missing most of the offseason with a broken foot.

It hasn’t been an easy preseason for the Cowboys, who are 1-1 and feeling the pain of numerous injuries. They best be thanking their lucky stars that Bryant’s wasn’t too severe.
