On a night where the Captain rang the post three times, Joey MacDonald saved the day for the Red Wings.  MacDonald was awesome all night, including a few sprawling saves to deny powerplay chances for the Ducks.  MacDonald was awesome all night in an otherwise forgettable performance, possibly making a case to put all the “Wings need to trade for a backup goaltender” rumors to rest.  JoeyMac (yeah I went there) has been solid, and at times incredible, as Jimmy Howard’s injury replacement.  Jimmy should be back in a week or two, but the way MacDonald has been playing, he can take his time.

Detroit was able to snag two points in Tomas Holmstrom’s 1000th NHL game.  The win is number 19 in a row at the Joe, one away from tying the NHL record.  Philadelphia comes to town on Sunday as Detroit goes for number 20.

This game felt a bit like a playoff game, escpecially down the stretch.  Penalties on both sides gave each team an overtime powerplay; neither was able to take advantage.  Cam Fowler beat MacDonald on an overtime breakaway but the post was able grab it and send it wide.

Pavel Datsyuk went all “Pavel Datsyuk” in the overtime 4-on-3, stealing the puck from Anaheim at the point, racing away to a breakaway opportunity and picked up a penalty in the process.

Bring on Philly.
