NHL Trade DUD-line Fails to Deliver as Promised…Again
Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

For hardcore hockey fans the NHL trade deadline is like a religious holiday. It’s almost as if you have not fully evolved as a hockey fan until you take the day off work, cancel all your appointments and glue yourself in front of your television or computer screen waiting for the trade madness to ensue. But, often, as was the case this year, it fails to deliver on all that is promised and usually ends with little to no fanfare.

Sports fans are no different from your average reality TV show or even a soap opera fan. Its human nature to crave drama and that is exactly was the deadline offers – the promise of real drama. But, unlike TV shows that can be edited with sappy music to create drama the trade deadline is happening in real time and usually delivers little more than hours of incessant chatter-boxing among talking heads that have little more to say than the casual fan does.

This year the thought of Rick Nash leaving the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets for a Stanley Cup contender was more than enough to drum up non-stop wall-to-wall coverage. It’s been one of the NHL’s biggest stories for months now and it was almost a forgone conclusion that the Columbus captain would be dealt. To the dismay of several GM’s and hockey insiders it was all for naught as a deal was never completed.

In 2011 there were 16 trades made on deadline day, down from the 29 deals made in 2010 – this season there were only 15. It seems that each year the number of transactions dwindles, leaving behind in it’s wake hours of wasted time and prolonged boredom.

Which when you think about it makes sense, money is tight and the NHL could possibly be headed towards a possible labor issue and a subsequent work stoppage. It’s possible GM’s could be a little leery about pulling the trigger on certain guys in fear of the uncertain future.

Despite the lack of activity this year, you can bet when the deadline rolls around next time there will be more of the same anticipation and wishful thinking – justified or not – because that is what we do as hockey fans. We read, we talk, we gossip and we complain. See you next season.
