MLB Rumors are heating up around the Los Angeles Angels as they supposedly want to add a pitcher at the trade deadline. I don’t think they have what it takes to get Cole Hamels or Zack Greinke, so I thought they’d focus more on a Ryan Dempster type guy. Well, it appears I’m wrong as rumors continue to swirl around the Angels talking trade for  Tampa Bay Rays RHP James Shields and Ben Zobrist.

Several outlets are reporting the Angels plan on sending Tyler Richards, Howie Kendrick, and some other minor leaguers for James Shields and Ben Zobrist.

This would be a huge trade for the Angels and Rays as they both battle for wild card positioning. Clearly the Rays are always keeping one eye on the future because they have too, and know the Angels are “in it to win it this year.” This could allow the Rays to get a crazy package for Shields and Zobrist but we’ll see.

This trade I don’t think hurts the Rays as much as it would help the Angels. Adding Shields to a rotation that already features Jered Weaver, CJ Wilson, Dan Haren, and Ervin Santana would be nasty. The Rays have a ton of younger arms that will be just fine so this could benefit both sides- but I would give the nod to the Angels at winning the deal.

We’ll see what happens as this chatter moves forward and we’ll continue to update you guys with what comes up.

Joe Maddon commented and laughed in the face of that trade, calling it untrue.

  2. John Wasylyk says:

    Hey Gil,
I think you need to check your facts before you proclaim the Angels pitching staff as “the best in baseball” if they can acquire a quality starter like Shields or Johnson.
Oakland, NY, Texas, and Tampa Bay all have team ERA’s better than LA and as compared to both leagues, they don’t even crack the top 10.
How about a little research before your begin crowning the Angels.
And didn’t Santana just last 3 innings or so in his last “dominant and impressive start”?
    Wow!

      Hey John,

Maybe you need to read a little harder as I said no such thing about them being the best rotation in baseball. I did say it would be “nasty” which it would be.

Furthermore, judging a guy on one start is pretty hilarious and shows minimal understanding of a 162 game season.

How about working on your reading skills before putting words in my mouth.
      Wow!
