The Houston Texans franchise began in 2002, but it really started with contruction of Reliant Stadium, which first began in the late 90s. After losing the Houston Oilers to Tennessee, it was only a matter of time before football was brought back to the southern part of Texas.
After all, football is a religion down here.
The Texans’ inaugural season was in 2002, and just a year later they hosted the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers. Now they are looking to bring sports’ largest spectacle back to Houston. The city will bid on Super Bowl 51, or LI in the normal Roman Numeral context.
Edgar Colon, Harris County Sports and Convention Corp. chairman, had this to say on the subject:
“That is something that is coming up. It’s in the calendar,” Edgar Colon said. “[Super Bowl LI is] the next one that is up for bid and we intend to participate and to participate forcefully and aggressively to bring the Super Bowl to Houston.”
Something that could entice the NFL to bring the Super Bowl to Houston is a proposed plan by a group of consultants to turn the Astrodome into a giant hotel of sorts. The plan would center around a luxury hotel, but also be available for use for major events or trade shows.
Something like this has been rumored to go down for quite a while now, but Houston could start seeing actual movement on this proposal in the near future.
Unfortunately, Dallas is expected to be a major player for Super Bowl L, and the NFL might not want to hold the game’s biggest game in the same state two years in a row. I wish that weren’t a factor, but it definitely could be.
